Jakarta:Demand for domestic textiles and textile products up 20 percent |
Demand for local textiles and textile products (TPT) rose by 20 percent."There has been an increase of 15 to 20 percent," the secretary general of the Indonesian Textile Association (API), Ernovian G Ismy, said here on Thursday.
So, according to the API data, from June 2008 to June 2009 the local TPT market share has risen by 68 percent, he said.
Ernovian said domestic sales of TPT now reached US$5.4 billion. "As seen in the markets such as in Tanah Abang, demand for imported garments have dropped.
Imported textiles and textile products however are still seen such as from China and India for embroidery or making "sari" dresses," he said.
As demand for domestic TPT rose, demand for imported products reaching 20 to 20 percent have now dropped by 12 percent.
"The condition is expected to last. Threats from imported products are still potential, moreover Indonesia has been targeted as a market," he said.
From 2007 to 2008 Indonesia`s TPT exports dropped but until June 2009 they still increased by three percent.
The drop in the TPT exports was due to a decline in the products` competitiveness abroad, which had been made worse due to increasing competition from Vietnam, Cambodia and Myanmar.
"Garment products from Cambodia and Myanmar are improving. They can become our rival," he said.
He said that it would be the government that could help improve the competiteveness of the domestic products outside quality through incentive support such as tax holidays to reduction in electricity tariff. |
