Plasma Pretreatment Technology Slashes Pollution in Dyeing & Printing |
Recently, China Textile Academy Jiangnan Branch made breakthrough in applying plasma technology in the pre-treatment process of padding cotton fabrics, by which the largest pollution source in the process is eliminated.
Before dyeing, printing and finishing, cotton fabrics must be desized and boiled off. Traditionally, desizing and boiling off are finished through strong alkali high-temperature steaming, and hot and cold water washings, which will generate a large quantity of wastewater, and are known as the heaviest pollution source throughout the dyeing & printing process.
Scientists have long noted that if plasma technology is applied, the process will be fast and pollution-free, but that's only available under the laboratory low air pressure.
In 2006, China Textile Academy Jiangnan Branch cooperated with China Academy of Sciences, to resolve this restraint. After years of study, they overcame the difficulty, and developed the plasma pre-treatment machine, which can work in the atmospheric pressure. Just by feeding fabrics into the machine which looks totally ordinary, the treated ones will go out from the other end, during which no pollutant is generated.
Additionally, the processing cost also reduces a lot. For per ten thousand meters of cotton fabrics, the cost is at least 450yuan, at most over 1000yuan lower than the traditional processing method.
It is reported that there are over 1000 cotton fabrics padding lines in China, with annual capacity of about 10bln meters. If this technology is applied on all lines, more than 20mln cubic meters of water (which would be released as wastewater), over 3mln mt of steam, and a lot of chemical additives can be saved, which account for over 600mln yuan.
